Parliament has approved the nomination of Japhet Koome as Inspector General of Police and has forwarded his name to President William Ruto for official appointment.
This comes a day after he appeared for vetting before the National Department of Security and Administration and the Senate Standing Committee on National Security, Defence and Foreign Affairs.
While moving the motion to debate, Kisumu senator Tom Ojienda attributed Koome as a highly qualified and educated person.
Nyamira senator Okong’o Omogeni described Koome as a professional who would turn around the National Police Service.
“Koome is a trained engineer from the University of Nairobi. For the first time, we will have a professional in the police service,” he said.
Uasin Gishu senator said that Koome will be taking office at a time when the country faces serious security issues and should be equal to the task that awaits him.
“The new IG should ensure his officers are motivated. For a long time, we have had police officers who are demoralised. Their allowances are not paid,” Mandago said.
During the vetting, Koome said that he would partner with stakeholders to serve Kenyans including IPOA, Haki Africa, Amnesty among other key interested parties.
Koome also said that he will engage special committees on the reimbursement of those officers who die while on duty.
