A man has been apprehended by detectives suspected of being responsible for the recent wave of armed robberies that have devastated Nairobi residents.
The suspect, John Mutiso Makau alias Katitu, is thought to be a returnee from the Al-Shabaab militia in Somalia, a statement from the DCI disclosed.
After a thrilling chase across Kayole’s estate, he was cornered and nabbed.
DCI stated, that it took the work of detectives from the elite Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau, who were assisted by a group of officers from the Kayole police division to arrest the suspect.
Prior to Katitu’s arrest, detectives had apprehended Brian Wambua Mbindyo and Danson Musyoka Mulee, two of his suspected collaborators, during the 48-hour painstakingly organised operation.
Detectives said that Katitu’s dramatic capture stunned the locals of Kayole’s Matopeni neighborhood after a three-kilometer-long ruckus as they pursued the culprit.
According to the DCI, Chief Inspector Gicharu (actual name withheld) is to be credited for the operation’s success since without him, the suspect who is believed to have undergone combat and martial arts training in neighboring Somalia would have escaped.
The detectives had enough valuable information about the suspects’ whereabouts pushing the accused to a brick wall.
Their detentions come in response to the horrifying murder of a man who was shot four times in broad daylight on October 31 in Donholm, just seconds after exiting a bank.
In the event that made national headlines, the suspects shot Nicodemus Mbuvi Munyasya four times as he exited Donholm’s Family bank holding a bag, killing him instantly.
The 38-year-old accounts clerk was leaving the bank after depositing a check and was toting two disposable cups in a carrier bag.
As soon as he left the banking area, two thugs on a motorcycle approached him and a scuffle ensued as the criminals fought for Munyasia’s bag, believing it to be full of cash.
The escaping gangsters shot Munyasia four times as he protested, three times on his legs and once in the chest.
One expended cartridge and one bullet head were discovered at the location by forensic crime scene investigators.
Three days prior to the incident, the suspects shot a woman in the ankle as she exited her M-pesa business in Umoja Estate before robbing her of her handbag, which held an undisclosed sum of money.
