Ten General Service Unit (GSU) officers together with their commanding officer are set to be arraigned over the killing of four protestors in Masimba Kajiado county in June this year.
The ten were arrested yesterday in Kibra, Nairobi and detained ahead of being presented in court on Monday.
Inspector of Police Cornelio Nabwera, Corporal Zakayo Kipterio and Police Constables Kasim Nunow, Hoseah Chikara, Mohammed Adan, Wambua Kilonzo, Wesley Kipkorir, Boaz Mogire, John Mwangi and Desmond Musyoka are currently being held at Kibra Police Station awaiting arraignment.
Late last month, the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) chairperson Anne Makori announced that the authority had handed over the investigations file and recommendation to the Office of the Directorate of Public Prosecution (ODPP) for action.
The investigations revealed the officers fired a total of 40 rounds of ammunition before making through barricades and driving off to their destination.
Seventeen spent cartridges were retrieved from the scene of incident as the autopsy showed that the victims died of single gunshot wounds, bullet fragments were retrieved from the bodies during the postmortem examinations.
The said police officers opened fire at demonstrators on the Nairobi to Mombasa Highway as they were en-route from transporting cargo belong to De La Rue from Mombasa to Nairobi when the encountered the demonstrators.
The four deceased Duncan Kanari, Letemir Topoika Yionti, Denis Matheka Mutua and Stanley Ntidu Tereu were among a group of demonstrators, protesting the invasion of their farms by the elephants.
The nine officers and their commanding officer will be arraigned on Monday to face charges of murder contrary to section 203 as read with section 204 of the penal code and grievous harm contrary to Section 24 of the Penal Code.
