The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party and the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) are the biggest beneficiaries of the Sh1.48 billion Political Parties Fund cash to be distributed to 48 political outfits in the country.
Thepresident William Ruto’s ledUDA and and opposition leader Raila Odinga’s ODM will share out Sh885million with UDA getting the biggest share of Sh577million while ODM gets Sh308million.
In a gazette notice by the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP), the Jubilee Party of former President Kenyatta will get Sh135million, a significant shrink from the previous financial years when it was the major beneficiary of the funds.
Jubilee party used to pocket more than Sh500 million every financial year.
Other political parties including Wiper Democratic Movement (WDM-K) of Kalonzo Musyoka will receive Sh72million while Democratic Action Party Kenya (DAP-K) of immediate former Defense Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa will get Sh31million.
The United Democratic Movement of Mandera Senator Ali Roba will get Sh26.9 million, Ford Kenya led by National Assembly Speaker Moses Masika gets Sh25.9 million, Amani National Congress formerly of Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi gets Sh26.6 million while Kenya’s longest serving political party led by former Baringo senator Gideon Moi of Kenya Africa National Union (KANU) will receive Sh23.9 million.
The National Assembly early in the year acrimoniously amended the sharing formula which was supported by immediate retired President Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga but opposed by Dr Ruto who was the deputy president at the time.
Ruto’s team had argued in the two Houses that the new formula would result in briefcase political parties for the purposes of benefiting from public money.
