The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) announced that the by-elections for Kandara, Garissa Township parliamentary seats, Elgeyo Marakwet senatorial seat and Member of County Assembly for Shella Ward, Lamu county will be held on January 5 2023.
This follows the appointments of Garissa township MP Aden Duale together with ex-Kandara MP Alice Wahome and Elgeyo Marakwet senator Kipchumba Murkomen to the cabinet after their approval by the National Assembly.
Senate speaker Amason Kingi and his National Assembly counterpart Moses Wetangula on October 27 announced vacancies in the constituencies as required by the constitution which is within 21 days of occurrence and giving notice to IEBC which will hold a by election within 90 days.
Aden Duale resigned as Garissa Town MP to take up the Defense Cabinet Secretary post, Kipchumba Murkomen as CS Roads and Transport, Alice Wahome as Water, Sanitation and Irrigation CS.
Political parties planning to participate in the mentioned seats by-elections have been advised to submit names of the persons contesting in party primaries before November 14, 2022.
Yesterday, President William Ruto visited Kandara, which political pundits see as a way of drumming up support for the UDA party in the Kenya Kwanza Coalition.
