At least three people are feared dead after a private car rammed into a tuktuk, crashing it into a matatu at Kamakis along the Eastern Bypass.
Witnesses claim that after the collision, the automobile struck two onlookers before coming to rest close to the car wash shed in front of the East Keys building.
Ruiru Sub-county Police Commander Cecilia Kemboi said the recklessly driven Prado rolled over after ramming into the two vehicles.
“We have commenced investigations to establish how the accident occurred but preliminary investigations show that the driver recklessly rammed into two vehicles,” Kemboi stated.
In a video circulating online, the driver looked confused after the accident before police arrived and took him into custody and later to the hospital for checks.
The three deceased are an 11-year-old, a 43-year old female, and a man aged 29 years.
Recently, the National Transportation Safety Administration (NTSA) reported that 3,541 people died in the past nine months, an increase of 7.8 percent from the same time last year.
According to NPS Spokesperson Bruno Shioso, the service reported a total of 15,924 road crash casualties countrywide from January 1, 2022, to September 26, 2022; 3,541 were fatally injured, 7,236 were critically injured, and 5,147 were only slightly hurt.
The NPS attributed the rise in collisions and fatalities on commuters not using seat belts, driving too fast, and poorly maintained vehicles.
A driver who is found guilty of drunk driving could receive a two-year prison sentence or a Sh100,000 fine in line with the Traffic Amendment Bill.
