The two consecutive vehicle bombings that occurred in Mogadishu, Somalia yesterday have significantly increased the death toll to 100 according to the country’s terror management report.
In a confirmation made by Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, almost 300 people sustained severe injuries from the invasion.
After visiting the attacked scene early today, Mohamud urged the international community to send medical personnel and resources to help the afflicted.
He also called on people to visit hospitals and donate blood in support of the survivors of the attack.
Additionally, he promised to provide free education to the children of those slain in the attack as well as to the children of those killed in the prior Al-Shabab attacks.
The Ministry of Education, situated in one of the busiest junctions in the country, was the target of the vehicle bombings.
Mohamud expressed his condemnation for the attack citing it as a cruel and cowardly terrorist attack on innocent people by the “morally bankrupt and criminal Al-shabaab gang”.
He assured the assault would not deter the government and the citizens’ efforts.
“Our government and courageous people will continue to protect Somalia against evil,” he said.
Mohamed Isse Koona, a local journalist, was one of those killed in the explosions.
According to the country’s terror report files, Al-Shabab terrorists assaulted the Hayat Hotel in Mogadishu in August, resulting to at least 20 fatalities and numerous injuries.
This triggered a 30-hour stalemate with security forces before the siege was finally lifted.
The recent invasion occurred as multiform attacks by government forces and local fighters to recapture territory from the extremists in south-central Somalia continue.
