Four people died when a vehicle they were traveling in ran over an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) on Friday mid morning hours at Sheikh Barrow on Elwak-Lafey Road in Mandera county.
Eleven others sustained serious injuries and were rushed to Lafey Sub-County Hospital for emergency treatment.
The four-wheel Toyota Land Cruiser was blown up by the landmine suspected to have been planted by the al Shabaab insurgents. North Eastern Regional Co-ordinator Amb Mahmoud Saleh said police have enhanced surveillance in the volatile region to stop the attacks.
“Police have been deployed in the area. The incident is unfortunate but we are on high alert,” he said.
Mandera, Garissa and Wajir counties have been worst hit by the by the planting landmines targeting security agencies, aide workers and passenger vehicles. Late last month, 17 police officers perished in IED attacks in Northern Kenya and Lamu areas.
