The climax of a triumphant fairy tale was hit yesterday, after the conjoined twins who were successfully separated at Kenyatta National Hospital last November, were discharged.
It was a moment of bliss as the twins, Blessing Kathure and Favor Karimi, whose first names denote their successful conquest, finally left the hospital premise after months of admission. The girls were joined at the sacral region of lower spinal cord when they were born on September, 2014.
They were separated last year in a one-of-a-kind surgery that lasted 23 hours, involved a team of fifty doctors and ultimately placed the country on the map as it was the first of its kind in Sub-Saharan Africa.
“The separation of theses twins joined the list of successful surgeries we have carried that have continued to transform lives of patients in Kidney transplants, open heart surgery and plastic and constructive surgery and managing pr-term babies just to mention but a few”, said Lily Koros, the Chief Executive Officer, Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH).
Caroline Mukiri, the mother of the twins, could not hide her joy as she held close her bundle of joy. She said that she came to Kenyatta hospital crying for her babies but now she was going home a happy mother.
“I am so happy. I wish anyone could understand,” she said.
The twins will be going for regular check up at the hospital.
