Motorists plying the Kisumu-Kakamega Road were forced to use alternative routes after a train was today involved in an accident and completely blocked the road.
The wagon was one of the most recently re-commissioned trains that experienced a technical hitch in the Muhoroni area leaving scores of passengers stranded for a long period of time.
While responding to the matter, Kenya Railways stated the issue shouldn’t be a major concern to the public attributing the incident to the heavy rainfall being experienced in some parts of the country.
“We wish to inform the public that the Kisumu bound train encountered a slight hitch occasioned by the heavy rains that earlier pounded the Muhoroni area. The issue has since been sorted out and the train is already on the way to Kisumu.” Kenya Railways said.
“We sincerely apologise to our customers for the inconvenience caused as a result,” added the railway management body.
The train ferrying over 200 passengers had left Nairobi at 6am and was expected to arrive at Kisumu at around 6pm. According to passengers on board, the incident occurred when the locomotive was negotiating a sharp corner.
It was making its second trip to the lake city of Kisumu after the continuation of passenger services in the Nairobi Kisumu route in the previous week.
Zaphania Kamuren, Muhoroni Deputy Sub-County Police Commander issued a statement concerning the incident that occurred at Nyando confirming that one of the rails went off the rail leading to derailment.
Kenyans were however unimpressed with the occurrence and took to social media to criticize management of Kenya Railways.
The corporation however absolved themselves of any blame and faulted the occurrence on the weather.
The management further reassured the public that the organization had learned valuable lessons from the incident and will further improve on its service delivery going forward.
