A businessman in Molo Town was arraigned before the Molo Law courts after he was arrested selling the G.O.K maize flour meant to be sold at kshs 90 at an inflated price.
Joseph Gachoka who is the proprietor of DNN Shoppers supermarket was arrested by police officers on operation who visited his supermarket and bought a 2 kg packet of maize flour which is under the Government Subsidy Programmme at Sh 100 instead of the recommended retail price of Shs 90.
He gave a breakdown that they buy a packet at Sh89 from their suppliers. When they add the cost of transport, rent for their business premises, pay workers in addition to their profit, they are forced to sell the 2 kg packet at Sh100.
Appearing before Resident Magistrate Rita Amwai, the accused was fined Sh10,000 or 3 months in prison.
Molo Traders Association Chairman Charles Marioko urged his fellow traders to avoid selling the subsidized unga because it is bringing losses.
