One woman was killed while another man sustained gunshot wound injuries after a convoy belonging to Mandera North parliamentary aspirant Abdi Ali was Mohamed attacked at Jabi area near Rhamu town in Mandera County.
The slain woman identified by the name Barrey Abdiand the injured man are both close relatives to Ali.
A local administrator, Chief of Ashabito location was in the convoy but escaped unhurt.
By today, the motive of the attack was yet to be established amid suspicion of intense political rivalry in the area.
North eastern Regional Coordinator Ambassador Muhamud saleh was held up in a crisis security meeting the whole day.
“I am in a meeting,” he said.
Ali is vying on a narc Kenya ticket.
“There is a crisis security meeting going on.” A senior officer said.
A contingent of security officers was immediately mobilized to pursue the attackers but no arrest were reported by yesterday evening.
However, Northern Kenya has been experiencing resurgence of terrorist attacks targeting the police, local administrators and political leaders.
Less than a fortnight ago, Mandera governor Ali Roba survived the fifth attack after his convoy hit a landmine at Shimo area from Arabia to Leafy.
Five security officers including Roba’s bodyguard were killed during the attack.
In less than a month so far, a total of eighteen police officers have been killed in Garissa, Mandera and lamu counties in incidents by suspected Al Shabaab insurgents.
Mandera was under dawn to dusk curfew but was lifted by the government to allow Muslim faithful’s celebrate the Holy Month of Ramadhan.
