The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officers yesterday raided offices linked to Deputy President William Ruto over claims that election-related servers were being hosted there.
Detectives tried to comb through the 9th floor of Transnational House in Nairobi’s Central Business District where two servers were found being relocated to Thika, Kiambu county as the building was undergoing renovation.
According to Nairobi Regional Commissioner James Mugera, the raid was meant to confirm reports that an election-connected server supposedly held in the office was being transferred to an unknown location.
“We are in this building following up on some information we received during the day that there were some servers which were being moved from the seventh floor of this Transnational building to an unknown location,” Mugera said.
The officers confirmed that the servers were owned by a company known as Lampstar Technologies.
They were being relocated to another firm as the office space had been leased to another organisation.
“When we came here, we found out that the place was being renovated and the owners of the servers, who are Lampstar Technologies, were moving the servers to another location in Thika,” stated the commissioner.
“The owner is telling us he uses them to host 18 Sacco’s mobile banking data but this is information that will be verified by investigators.
It’s not a criminal offence to move servers but we act on any tip we receive. We came to establish what it is that they do. If we’re satisfied, fine, but for now it’s a matter under investigation,” Mugera stated.
The detective team further carried on their search to another office in the Central Business District where they seized more computers.
