The government today signed a Sh 45 billion water and sanitation project with African Development Bank (ADB) as part of its commitment to ensure access to clean water across the country.
The government will supplement the program with another sh 6.1billion to help in making water accessible to Kenyans.
The project which will kick-off in November this year in Marsabit and Mandera Counties will benefit 28 towns with an estimated 1.4 million people getting access to clean water and another 700,000 people getting connection to water-borne sewerage systems.
Today, Water Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa led the signing of the multi-billion deal which runs up to November 2019.
Amongst the big towns to benefit from the project include Mandera, Marsabit, Limuru, Kiambu, Kikuyu, Gatundu, Kerugoya, Chuka, Chogoria, Meru, Machakos, Mwala, Mbiuni, Pemba in Mombasa and Olkalau.
Kaparen in Eldoret, Narok, Chepararia, Kapenguria, Ugunya, Ukwala, Oyugis, Kendu Bay, Lolgorian, Kilgoris, Nandi Hills, Mulot, Bomet, Malaba, Kiptogot, Kolongolo and Kipkaren dam in Eldoret Town are also other areas set to benefit from the sustainable water supply and sanitation project.
“We are partnering with African Development Bank to ensure access to water, sanitation and sewerage to Kenyans,” said Wamalwa at his offices today.
“The Kenya Towns and Sustainable Water and Sanitation Program cover 28 towns across Kenya. The major beneficiaries will include 1.4 million people who will be provided with water supply services and 700,000 people will have connection to water-borne sewerage systems,” he added.
