Kasarani Officer Commanding Police Division (OCPD) Peter Mwanzo has been transferred to Nakuru as County Police Commander replacing Beatrice Kiraguri following the rising insecurity.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i declared war on the gangs and directed 24-hour surveillance in the affected estates which is expected to commence today.
The CS who was accompanied by General Service Unit (GSU) Commandant, David Kanja, Inspector General of Police, Hilary Mutyambai and Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) boss, George Kinoti stated that the operation will continue until the area is free of criminal gangs.
“We cannot allow gangs to rule the city as they find women in their houses to kill them, their leaders have been profiled, and they will be pursued to the last,” he said.
Speaking at All Nations Church in Workers Estate, Matiang’i further warned leaders who have been protecting, financing or bailing out the gang members.
“If any leader is found to be hiding the gangsters, he will be treated as one of them,” he said.
Governor Lee Kinyanjui promised to cooperate with the National government in eliminating the gangs.
In the same breath, crude weapons thought to have been used by members of the infamous “Confirm gang” have been found following a stepped-up crackdown in Nakuru to root them out.
Through a statement released yesterday, the National Police Service (NPS) said that it had seized a number of machetes, cell phones, and motorcycles that were allegedly used by the alleged offenders.
“Owing to the ongoing operation against the gang adherents, many suspects have been arrested and arraigned, while others are actively being pursued,” read the NPS statement.
“Nakuru Police have recovered crude weapons, mobile phones, and motorcycles suspected to have been used as a means of transport in their criminal escapades.”
This comes after Matiang’i recently ordered the security agencies to find and prosecute those responsible for the recent string of unexplained killings in the Mawanga area of Nakuru.
According to Rift Valley Regional Commissioner, Mohamed Maalim’s report yesterday, 128 suspects have already been nabbed in connection to the crime.
