Nyeri Nurses have called off their three-week strike after the county government agreed to honour some of their grievances.
The announcement to end the strike was made today in a joint press conference between Nyeri Governor Samuel Wamathai and Kenya National Union of Nurses County officials.
The nurses were demanding to be given promotions and to have more nurses to be employed to address a shortfall of over 200 nurses in the county.
The Governor said the county has addressed issues raised and they now expect the nurses to resume duty as soon as possible.
“I would like to tender my sincere apologies to Nyeri residents for the suffering they have undergone for the period the nurses were on strike,” he said. KNUN Nyeri Branch General Secretary Beatrice Nduati said 438 nurses out of 479 have been awarded with promotion letters.
She said the remaining number will be promoted once a due process has been carried out, adding that she is hopeful that that will take place soon.
