The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has refuted claims that there is a plot to rig the 2022 elections by removing at least one million names of registered voters from the register.
IEBC’s chair Wafula Chebukati today, in a press briefing, insisted that no data has been lost in the voter’s register.
Chebukati further stated that Kenyans raising concern over their names missing are those who had requested transfers.
“The commission assures Kenyans that their data is intact. That the ongoing process is to ensure we have a clean register before the election. Let’s not talk about one million names missing, there is no such a thing,” he stated.
“The one million names we are talking about are for those who applied for transfers and we are undergoing the process of ensuring the proper transfers are affected,” he said.
Rigging claims from the Deputy President-led team had emerged last week. A section of the leaders said that a section of voters from DP’s stronghold was missing in the official register.
The DP, in a meeting with the European Union, intimated that there were deliberate attempts to remove the names of his supporters from the register.
“We are intending to write to the IEBC on this matter and get details on how a million names disappeared from the register.
It’s dangerous when public officials chest thump, saying the deep state will manipulate the elections,” Ruto said.
Chebukati, on the other hand, urged Kenyans to desist from spreading rumours on the voter’s register ahead of the final register being ready on June 9.
“All the talks about the register should await the gazettement of the register, publication, and sharing of the register. The ongoing process is to ensure we have a clean register,” he said.
Eligible voters have until Thursday midnight to verify their registration details ahead of the August 9 general election.
