Mathira Member of Parliament Rigathi Gachagua has been picked as Kenya Kwanza Coalition presidential flagbearer Deputy President William Ruto’s running mate.
The DP made the announcement at his official Karen residence, putting an end to months of speculation about his running mate selection.
“The DP under Kenya Kwanza will perform real duty as assigned to him by the president,” he said.
Speaker JB Muturi, governor Waiguru, Senator Kithure Kindiki, MPs Ndindi Nyoro, Alice Wahome are among those shortlisted as potential candidates.
Ruto described Gachagua as “an astute debater, a successful elected politician who is a principled, resilient and fearless fighter for the right cause.”
“I am honoured by the responsibility and faith that you have bestowed upon me on the most defining election. This is one of the greatest days of my life and with humility I thank God for the favour he has shown me,” Gachagua said.
Gachagua is a UDA member who has also played a key role in Ruto’s political dealings with allies. He has been a firm advocate of Ruto and the UDA.
Azimio presidential candidate Raila Odinga today is expected to name his running mate during a rally at the Kamukunji grounds in Nairobi.
