Over a 1000 nurses from Nyeri County have vowed to continue with the
strike that entered second week today saying the county government
of Nyeri has remained mum on their grievances.
The General Secretary Kenya National Union of Nurses Nyeri Branch,
Beatrice Nduati said they have no choice but to keep off work until such a
time when their complaints will be addressed.
She accused the county government of being insensitive to nurses and
the health sub-sector at large having failed to act in speed to offer a
long-lasting solution to the problem.
“We have been to each and every department relevant to the matters we
are raising in Nyeri County Government and nothing has been
forthcoming,” she said
Nduati also claimed that the county has deliberately been
harassing them through various labour actions.
She cited one instance last year when all nurses were forced to
undergo an interviewing process in order to be awarded job promotion.
“Our colleagues in other counties were awarded their promotions
through common cadre establishment. But ours was different because we
were made undergo an interviewing process. Why this? ” she paused.
County Executive In charge of health Dr. Charles Githinji who spoke to
The Informer on phone said that he is looking forward to getting a
solution to the problem by Wednesday of this week.
A source at the county government privy to the goings-on
accused senior officials at the county government of being reluctant
to solve problems.
