Residents in Matungu village, Kakamega County are mourning the death of a 10-month-old baby who drowned in a basin full of water.
According to a report from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Audrey Akumu, 25, was doing the family’s laundry outside her house while her baby playing behind her.
Akumu suddenly realized that the baby had gone silent and turned back to see if he was okay, only to see him inside the basin.
“The young mother raised an alarm, alerting the neighbours who helped retrieve the baby from the water basin. They rushed the baby to nearby Bliss Medical Centre where the baby was pronounced dead on arrival,” read the report.
“We share our deepest sympathies with Audrey, her relatives and friends as they try to come to terms with the loss of their little angel,” DCI said.
Meanwhile, the DCI has advised parents and guardians that it is never too late to save a child’s life even if they stop breathing.
“Perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) even if a child is unresponsive and do not stop until medical professionals take over,” the DCI advised.
