Former Laikipia North Member of Parliament (MP) Mathew Lempurkel has been charged afresh with hate speech.
This is after the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji amended the charges against him introducing an additional count of hate speech.
According to the new charge, the former MP is accused of making hateful remarks against a community while on a television show.
The DPP said the remarks caused ethnic hatred in Laikipia County.
In 2016, Lempurkel was accused of assaulting the current Laikipia North MP Sarah Korere at Harambee House in Nairobi.
He also faces another charge of uttering abusive and threatening remarks against another community on the same date.
Lempurkel, whose assault case is pending at the appellate court, was freed on Sh150,000 cash bail after the court retained the bail terms, he was granted on September 9, 2021.
The case will be mentioned on February 16.
