Interior Cabinet Secretary Doctor Fred Matiang’i has defended his decision to support Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga.
Speaking after being named in a member of the Nyakach clan in a ceremony held in Nyakach, Kisumu County, Matiang’i said he doesn’t need permission from anyone to support Raila’s presidential bid.
According to him, the president has hinted at supporting Raila’s candidature and takes his cue from the president.
“Is there a problem when I say that? I have not asked for permission from anyone. Uhuru has given me the job. It is logical that I queue where the president is queuing since I am his CS,” he said.
Matiang’i says he has no regrets over this move given that the closing of ranks by the two has been of great benefit to the country.
He says every well-meaning citizen must support efforts being made to unite the country.
He said the ‘Handshake’ brought stability to the country that has made it possible for the government to implement numerous development projects that are beneficial to Kenyans.
“I personally support the handshake both as a presidential undertaking and because of its evident benefits to the country and I, therefore, have no apologies to make,” he said.
He also noted that the security environment, for instance, has hugely benefited from the handshake by calming the country.
And owing to its benefits, Matiang’i says all the chiefs, their assistants, and the entire National Government Administration Officers (NGAO) must actively support President Uhuru Kenyatta’s programs and projects including the handshake.
Matiang’i further indicated that his loyalty to President Kenyatta is unwavering for the reason that there can never be two centers of power. He insists that major development projects done in the last few years are purely courtesy of the leadership of Kenyatta.
“Anyone else taking credit for Government projects or claiming to have influenced major infrastructure development is a hypocrite and engaging in political conmanship,” he said.
Deputy President William Ruto and his allies have been calling for Matiang’i’s resignation over a perceived role in 2022 succession politics.
Matiang’i was installed as a member of the Nyakach clan.
“The ceremony will begin with you seated on a three-legged seat so that your leadership lasts for years and years,” an elder was heard saying.
“Son of Nyakach, a great honour bestowed on me by the elders of Nyakach today during the operationalisation of the newly formed Central Nyakach division in Kisumu,” Matiang’i tweeted.
