A woman has sued Narok Senator Ledama Olekina demanding Sh200,000 in monthly child support.
In an application filed at Milimani law courts, Esther Wanjiru Gatume want the senator compelled to pay an interim maintenance for her one-year old son.
Through lawyer Kephar Ojijoh, the woman claimed the senator is the biological father of the child but has refused to take parental responsibility when she is unemployed and has no means to take care of the baby.
“In the best interest of the minor, the plantiff (Wanjiru) has tried reaching out to the defendant (Ole Kina) through all available means to no avail. He is an elected member of the Kenyan Parliament, the senator of Narok County and a prolific businessman with excessive means to provide for the minor,” read the application.
According to Wanjiru, she had a brief romantic relationship with the senator from September 2019 to July 2020.
However, he ended the relationship and cut ties with the woman when he learnt that she was pregnant.
“When I conceived and realized I was pregnant, I immediately informed the respondent that he was going to be a father. But to my dismay and utter shock the respondents cut off communication with me,” Wanjiru says in court documents.
“I struggled with the pregnancy alone until October 22, 2020 when I delivered. He did not offer me any financial assistance or emotional support during the whole period and was even absent during the birth of his child.”
She claims that Olekina has remained silent despite informing him when the child was born and requesting him to take responsibility.
Wanjiru is demanding Sh350,000 per month to cater for house help (Sh17,000), food (Sh50,000), medical (Sh40,000), shelter (Sh80,000), clothing (Sh50,000), entertainment (Sh43,000), utility bills (Sh50,000) and service charge of Sh20,000.
