Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) detectives drawn from the Customs Department have intercepted 4.88 kilograms of undeclared gold jewellery worth Sh31 million at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) Nairobi.
This was after Customs Officers stationed at JKIA identified a group of approximately 30 female Kenyan travellers who were departing from Nairobi to Mumbai, India through Doha.
“The travellers are directly associated to three female travellers earlier intercepted entering Mumbai with approximate 1 kg of gold concealed internally on 19th August, 2021,” stated KRA.
The 15 women who were on board the flight were asked to cancel the flight to allow for further investigations.
The intercepted gold and jewellery has been deposited in the Customs warehouse.
“We encourage passengers to declare all cargo/items at the Ports of entry and exit as required under the provisions of the Second and Third Schedules of the EAC Customs Management Act, 2004,” stated the authority.
In Meru, police netted alcoholic drinks worth Sh6 million with fake excise duty stamps.
KRA officials and police officers raided a private residence-turned warehouse on the outskirts of Nkubu town and recovered assorted alcohol brands stashed in the stores.
According to KRA official Mutembei Nyaga, the owner of the premises escaped.
The officers found over 2,000 cartons of various brands in the stores, ready to be released to the market.
“We found the goods with fake tax stamps. From the recovered goods, we are talking about Sh6 million (in excise duty) evaded,” said the official.
