Details have emerged that the man involved in the mysterious death of a British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) journalist Katherine Mitchell Rowena was engaged.
The suspect, Tamati Mauti, booked into a hotel room at Ibis Styles on the eighth floor with his girlfriend, Michelle Akinyi.
According to reports, Mauti shared drinks with Mitchell at the hotel’s bar leaving Akinyi in their room.
“As she left for her room, Mauti followed the British national and entered her room,” read police report.
It is suspected that this is when the two engaged in a scuffle leading to the death of the BBC manager.
Mitchell was found dead in her hotel room in Nairobi on Friday, November 19, and detectives believe Mauti stabbed her to death and later killed himself.
Nairobi Regional Police Commander Benjamin Nthumbi said her hotel door was closed from inside when sleuths arrived.
“Upon checking through the window, the detectives saw a man’s body lying on the ground. He was later identified as the man Mitchell had been seen with earlier,” Nthumbi said.
Akinyi discovered her boyfriend had died when she was taken to Kilimani Police Station to record her statement.
Kilimani Sub County Police Commander Muturi Mbogo said Akinyi was shocked when detectives brought her in for questioning.
“She quickly identified the body of her boyfriend and this is when we even knew that they had planned to wed this December,” said Mbogo.
The police are currently looking into the circumstances under which a man who had been seen with her at the hotel plunged to his death from the eighth floor.
