At least 270,000 new consumers were connected to the national power grid last year.
According to the Economic Survey 2017, the 38.2 per cent increment of connections was due to the Last Mile Connectivity Programme which was launched in September 2015.
In the first phase of the programme, Kenya Power had targeted 314,200 households .
Due to increased connections, the units of electricity sold to the households in rural homes also increased by 2.3 per cent from 525 million units to 537 million units.
The second and third phases of the project, which included the installation of new transformers and extension of low voltage network aimed at reaching an additional 500,000 customers thereby adding 2.5 million Kenyans to the power grid.
The full implementation of the programme will facilitate the Government’s target of connecting 70 per cent of Kenyan households by 2017 thereby achievement of universal access by 2020.
