The three convicted terrorists who escaped from Kamiti Maximum Prison have been arrested in Kitui enroute to Garissa.
Security agencies believe they were intending to cross over to Somalia.
A muti-agency security team tracked down Musharraf Abdalla Akhulunga also known as Zarkarawi, Mohammed Ali Abikar and Joseph Juma Odhiambo also known as Yusuf from their hideout hours after President Uhuru Kenyatta issued a stern decree to the national security force rams to use all necessary and available resources to recapture the terror convicts.
The trio are being transported back to Nairobi.
The three fugitives broke out of the prison at around 1am on Sunday by creating lumps under their blankets that duped prison guards into thinking that they were in their cell asleep.
However, wardens only learnt of the escape on Monday at around 10am.
It is believed that the convicts set up their escape route during routine maintenance work carried out in the cell block they were being held in. The three men climbed out of a hole in the wall.
Interior CS Fred Matiangi blamed laxity and incompetence to what is believed to have been aided escape.
Already, 13 wardens have been arrested and Commissioner General of Prisons Wycliffe Ogallo fired.
