Nairobi Governor Ann Kananu has nominated Chief of Staff Paul Mutunga Mutungi to be her deputy a day after taking oath of office .
In a letter, the governor has informed Nairobi County Assembly Speaker Benson Mutura of the nomination noting that there is a vacancy in the office of the Deputy Governor.
“In considering this nomination, I have taken into account his professional qualifications, leadership qualities, gender balance and competencies necessary for the Deputy Governor’s seat,” read part of the letter.
“I therefore humbly urge the county assembly to expedite the vetting process of the nominee for purposes of appointment, pursuant to the provision of section 8 (1) (a) and 32D(3) of the County Government Act.”
Mutungi is a seasoned politician having served as a councilor in the defunct Nairobi City Council.
He also unsuccessfully vied for the Embakasi South parliamentary mini polls in 2017.
His name will be tabled to the 10-member Select committee on the Appointments led by the Speaker as its chairperson and Majority Leader as the vice-chair for vetting.
Kananu was sworn in as the third Governor of Nairobi County in a ceremony at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) grounds.
Speaking during the swearing in, Kananu promised to restore the Capital’s lost glory and ensure Nairobians get better and quality services.
“My fellow Nairobians I have today take the Governors oath of office and sworn to truly and diligently serve the county of Nairobi without fear, favour or ill will. I commit to working for and with all of you,” said Governor Anne Kananu Mwenda.
Kananu who was the acting governor of Nairobi since the ouster of Mike Sonko in December 2020, also promised work closely with Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) under Genenral Mohammed Badi.
