The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) now says new voter registration process will continue taking place until further advised.
In a statement, the commission chairperson Wafula Chebukati has said that the electoral body will obey the court order to extend the deadline.
“…the Commission has directed that pending hearing of the case tomorrow, registration process will continue taking place until further advised,” stated Chebukati.
On Monday, the High Court sitting in Eldoret issued exparte orders prohibiting the commission from closing the national voter registration exercise scheduled to end today 2nd November, 2021.
Patrick Cherono obtained the orders from the High Court, pending a case she filed on Monday morning.
In her petition, Cherono argues that IEBC can not end the exercise because it has not met its target.
The orders were issued by Justice Eric Ogolla.
The commission moved to court to challenge the order and the case will be determined today.
The electoral commission aims to enroll six million new voters in a mass registration drive however, it’s failing dismally to meet this target.
Last week, the IEBC appealed to all Kenyans eligible to take advantage of the remaining one week and register, emphasizing that staff were ready to enroll people in every ward.
Politicians have urged more people, particularly the youth to turn up and register as voters.
