Police in Likoni area of Mombasa county are investigating claims of Mombasa Republican Council (MRC) regrouping and recruiting new members, ahead of the August 8 general election.
Likoni Deputy Police chief Anthony Shimoli said that police are on high alert after receiving reports that the group was carrying out secret oathing to its newly recruited members.
“We received information that some senior leaders in the MRC, have been recruiting members secretly to join the group and the ceremony to oath the new members was scheduled for yesterday night, however, we did not manage to arrest anyone though we are following leads that will soon help us catch up with them”, said Shimoli.
He said the illegal oathing exercise was being carried in Soweto area.
Shimoli noted that six suspects who managed to evade police dragnet wore red ribbons in their heads. The suspects were spotted by residents who alerted police officers.
“We managed to recover several paraphernalia including; blood, meat, red ribbons and MRC constitution among other items,” he said.
