Deputy President William Ruto has applauded the decision by Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru to defect from Jubilee Party and join United Democratic Alliance party.
Ruto said leadership is about making difficult decisions and this move has made the people of Kirinyaga proud.
“I am proud that you have made this decision that we want to work together and we want to work this journey together. You are most welcome. You are actually at home in this team,” he said
“You said you have been waiting for this moment. I have also told you, even on this other side we have been waiting for this moment. Because we all knew it was going to happen.”
The DP said together with President Uhuru Kenyatta, they had worked with Waiguru to shape Jubilee’s development plan and that her joining UDA would strengthen the Hustler movement’s think-tank.
He noted that it would have been a big loss to his political ambitions had Waiguru not joined his hustler movement.
“We are one family, we have a history together, we have done many things together. We have complemented one another, and we have formed a formidable team that has not only won an election but has also helped us have a track record of working for the people of Kenya,” he said.
According to Ruto, the decision by Waiguru demonstrates that there are many more within the ruling party that could be waiting to join his camp.
“It takes very courageous leaders to make serious decisions. Many people would rather make peace with mediocrity, rather than be bold and make a decision that will shape the future,” he added.
Ruto asked party members and supporters to accommodate those joining, adding that nobody should feel threatened.
Waiguru today joined UDA after months of speculation.
Speaking after a closed-door meeting with Ruto at his Karen residence, Waiguru said she consulted and was directed towards UDA.
According to the County chief, everybody in politics must be very careful to stay relevant and listen to the people.
”The bible says when you lack wisdom you ask for it. I have asked for wisdom I think I have listened and checked with many members seated here, I have checked with others who are not here and others who are still in Jubilee but have not declared that they are moving,” she said.
Waiguru said that Kirinyaga people spoke their minds during Mashujaa day celebrations and she listened.
She was accompanied by 25 Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) and also present was the County Assembly Speaker Anthony Gathumbi.
Kirinyaga Woman Representative Wangui Ngirici welcomed Waiguru to the party.
“UDA house is a big house. She is welcome,” she posted on her Facebook page.
