Police in Bomet have launched manhunt for nine prisoners who escaped from their custody today morning.
Bomet Central sub-county police boss Musa Omar Imamai said the nine escapees, five adults and four juveniles.
According to Omar, the nine escapees managed to squeeze themselves out using a small opening they had created.
The Officer Commanding Station (OCS) discovered that some of the suspects were missing while he was making the routine checks.
Omar said the juveniles were being detained in police cells because Bomet and Jericho prisons do not have the appropriate facilities to detain juveniles.
“Bomet and Kericho prisons don’t have a facility for juveniles, so juvenile prisoners held or having pending cases before court are held in stations instead of the prison, that’s why we had the four in our custody ,” he said.
The OCS said that the nine had been accused of various offenses and were set to appear in court today.
Three of the escapees were scheduled to face theft charges while two others were arrested for being in possession of illicit brew.
Police are still investigating how the inmates managed to cut the grills without officers on duty noticing.
