The government has extended the nationwide curfew for another 30 days.
Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe said the country is still above the World Health Organisation recommended positivity rate of five per cent for a consistent of two weeks period.
Speaking during the launch of the Covid-19 Online Information Portal for media professionals in Kenya, Kagwe said the 30-day extension will also ensure the Government achieves its targeted mass Covid-19 vaccination program across the country.
“We need the 30 days and extend the time to so that we can vaccinate as many people during that period as possible,” he said.
He noted that after vaccination is when the government can be able to fully open the economy.
Other containment measures including operation hours for bars and restaurants as well as the ban on gatherings remain as previously announced.
He said a formal announcement will be made by end of month after National Emergency Response Committee on Coronavirus meets.
As of yesterday, the positivity rate stood at 2.7 per cent after 91 new infections were confirmed from a sample size of 3,435 tested in the last 24 hours.
This pushed the total confirmed positive cases to 250,114.
The Government targets to vaccinate 5.8 million vaccinations by Mashujaa day celebrations on the 20th of October.
