National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi has been endorsed by Democratic Party as Presidential flagbearer in next year’s election.
The announcement was made yesterday in Nyeri during a meeting of Mt Kenya delegates led by national chairman Esau Kioni.
Kioni said that they have settled on Muturi following deliberations by delegates from Mt Kenya and Nairobi.
“We have conducted extensive vetting…we will be supporting Speaker Muturi as our presidential candidate. We hereby invite him to join us as we pledge our full support,” Kioni said.
The party officials said the Speaker had the attributes of a true leader which include discipline and integrity.
“Our decision to pick Muturi has been informed by the fact that he cuts a national image and has a good record performance as a civil servant” he explained.
While dismissing joining coalitions ahead of the polls, Kioni said the party would traverse the country to campaign for him.
Muturi endorsement comes weeks after the party officials met a Nairobi hotel and approved Muturi’s application for life membership.
In July this year, Muturi declared that he will be running for presidency in 2022.
His coronation has had resistance from a section of leaders in Mt Kenya Region who say they don’t recognize him as Mt Kenya’s Spokesman.
Three governors from Mt Kenya East Martin Wambora (Embu) ,Muthomi Njuki (Tharaka Nithi)and Kiraitu Murungi (Meru) declared their support for his Coronation as Mt Kenya spokesman.
However, others from the other side of the Mt Kenya region have shown resistance in subscribing to Muturi’s Coronation as Mt Kenya spokesman
Last mont the party officials met Party of National Unity (PNU) and Safina and formed a coalition partnership in preparation for the 2022 general elections.
On his twitter account, Muturi yesterday said that his priority would be to curb borrowing.
He said that the country must stop borrowing, renegotiate the high interest loans, white elephant projects and refocus on food security alongside a predictable tax regime.
Additionally, Muturi said to effectively fight corruption, court cases should be expedited.
“We must give corruption cases a time frame within which they must be concluded,” he twitted.
He also said that he would put the youth on top of his development strategy, stating that they form the highest percentage of the population.
“The youth must now step up to actualise themselves. They must stop being used as projects for politicians and start seeking leadership positions,” he said.
