A driver of a Kiambu bound matatu with 14 students of Kagwe girls in Lari constituency on board died while receiving treatment after it collided head on with a pickup at Kamuchege area along Kagwe Githunguri road on Wednesday.
The driver whose name was not immediately established died while receiving treatment at Githunguri sub county hospital, where he was rushed together with the students.
A police source intimated that four students who sustained serious fractures on their hands, head injuries were transferred to Kiambu county hospital where they were admitted, while the other 10 were treated with minor injuries and discharged.
It was reported that, the students from the extra county school boarded the Toyota Hiace matatu, after they closed for the April holiday with over speeding with a view of making many trips.
However, on arriving at sharp corner at Kamuchege along the murram road, he tried to slow down the vehicle to avoid hitting an oncoming pick up, but he lost control and hit the pickup and the matatu rolled several times into a nearby nappier grass plantation.
“We were walking along the hill when we saw the matatu speeding and hooting. The pickup had to slow down but the matatu skidded towards it and hit it head on. Students were screaming all through even when it was rolling” said an eye witness.
Waweru said residents rushed to the matatu and started removing the students taking them to hospital.
