The Naivasha Sub County Security Committee has raised an alert over the increasing cases of fire incidents in major forests and conservancies in the area.
The committee noted that hundreds of acres of vegetation had been destroyed adding that it was of concern to the country.
According to the area Deputy County Commissioner Isaac Masinde, the recent fire outbreaks at Longonot National park, KWS Game farm and Malu conservancy had wiped off grass that could be fed to animals for months.
Masinde said they were investigating the rising cases adding that some of the herders who have invaded land in the area were to blame.
“Only last night fire consumed close to 50 acres of vegetation at Game Farm that also serves as animal corridor”.
He added that tens of herders were burning vegetation owing to a traditional taboo terming the move as illegal.
“The herders have developed a habit of burning grass so as to attract the rains and we have cautioned them that should they continue we will definitely take action”.
Masinde said there were youths who have contracted to clear bushy sections of the Nairobi-Nakuru and Naivasha-Mai Mahiu highways noting that this was a recipe for fire outbreaks.
