The Departmental Committee on Justice and Legal Affairs has today Approved the Nomination of Hon. Lady Justice Martha Koome as the next Chief Justice of the Republic of Kenya.
JLAC Chairperson Muturi Kigano said that the committee has unanimously endorsed the approval of Lady Justice Koome for appointment by His Excellency the President to become the next Chief Justice of the Republic.
“She will be seeking to reclaim lost glory for the judiciary in line with the principles that were for a long time enunciated by the late Justice Chunilal Madan,” he said.
Once the committee tables the approval report, the whole House will then debate it and votes to uphold the decision or overturn it.
National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi had gazetted a special house sitting today, for the tabling and debate of JLAC Report on the vetting of Koome.
Koome was vetted by the JLAC last week Thursday where she said that she serves Kenyans with absolute commitment from the depth of her heart and her gender or where she comes from does not come in her way.
Koome was nominated by the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) and her name approved by President Uhuru Kenyatta after emerging top among nine other candidates interviewed for the post.
In a letter dated April 28, the president asked National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi to fast-track the vetting.
President Kenyatta also attached the required documents including the original copy of the JSC report on the recruitment and selection process for the CJ and Justice Koome’s Curriculum Vitae, which were forwarded to JLAC.
As her results of her nomination, Justice Koome will become the country’s third CJ since the new constitution came into force.
