Embattled Wajir County Governor Mohamed Abdi Mohamud is accused neglecting his official duties and has instead delegated authority to run the county his wife Kheira Omar.
According to Tulatula Member of County Assembly Abdullahi Isack, the governor has allowed his wife to literally run county affairs as the de facto authority turning the county into a family affair.
“He ceremoniously officiates and signs off where necessary for decisions she unilaterally makes based on her own wishes and judgment without due regard to any law,” Isack said.
Further, he added that it is an open secret in Wajir County and far beyond its borders that Kheira is the ‘supreme leader’ of the county and it is always her way or the highway.
“…This has brought ridicule and disrepute to the Office of the Governor,” he added.
Members of the Wajir County Assembly filed a motion to impeach Mohammud over claims of corruption, abuse of office and incompetency.
33 out of 49 MCAs filed a motion to impeach him and the motion has already gone through the first reading on the floor of the Assembly.
The Governor has been notified to appear before the Assembly today to defend himself before the MCAs.
He will also have to explain why he has reshuffled chief officers in the Finance docket six times in two years.
The governor also stands accused of incurring unsustainable debts and other pending obligations to the tune of Sh2 billion.
Allegedly, he failed to draft the medium-term strategy for the 2020/2021 financial year.
“Lack of plan puts the county in a precarious financial position as it will have no budget to run its affairs which may lead to protracted and costly court battles with creditors eventually auctioning off county assets,” Isack said.
According to Wajir Senator Dr Ali Abdullahi, nothing is working in the county and the committee needs to save residents from the Governor’s reign.
“We have been to almost every office in this country with this complaints… Once we complain, the governor does what he does best, compromising the officials,” Ali told the committee.
Nominated Senator Farhiya Ali, also a resident of Wajir County, wants the Senate to put in place measures to protect the petitioner who is apparently fearing for his life.
However, members of the committee said it is important to listen to all sides and asked the petitioner to provide evidence proving the allegations that he is making against the governor.
The committee agreed to continue pursuing the petition despite the filing of a motion seeking to impeach the governor saying the two processes are independent.
The Senate Committee led by Homa Bay Senator Moses Otieno Kajwang is handling a petition by Mr. Osman Idris Mohamed, a resident of Wajir County.
