Residents of the remote Kuria Sub County have a sigh of relief after the World Vision Kenya constructed five Early Childhood Development Education classes at a cost of Sh 6.5 Million.
While handing over the well constructed classrooms to the schools’ administration , Migori County World Vision programme manager Tom Masinde said the project was of importance to ensure children had a foundation of the knowledge.
The classes were constructed in Igena Itambe and Bongebo primary schools in Ntimaru West Ward while St Cecilia Kegonche primary school and Nyabikongori primary were privileged in Nyabasi West ward.
Itongo Primary was the only beneficiary in Ntimaru East ward. He said World Vision was committed to construct five ECDE classes per year for the next five years in Kuria East Sub-county adding that the classes will cater for over 300 young children who were previously either learning under trees or in poorly constructed classrooms.
“We have witnessed cases of children learning under trees or in structures without desks or windows to protect them from rain and harsh weather. This will be a thing of the past,” he said He reiterated that the construction is part of World Vision’s commitment to improve the education standards in Migori County.
Masinde exuded confidence that having good education foundation for Kuria children will aid in against Female Genital Mutilation/cut which is still practiced in the Sub County. He said similar projects were being undertaken in 35 other counties where World vision activities was operational.
Migori County Government CEC for Education, Youth& ICT Mr. Michael Ogutu commended the organization saying the gesture would go a long way in bridging the challenges the County Government was facing in the ECD sector. “As a county, we will complement World Vision effort by employing ECD teachers in the schools.
“We plan to add 200 ECD teachers in Migori County and these five schools will get a teacher each,” Ogutu said. Among other projects that World Vision implements include child sponsorship and protection, health, education, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene.
