Kisumu MCAs have opposed an intended foreign trip organized for the speaker Ann Adul and other six members.
The assembly delegated county legislation chairman and East Kano/Wawidhi MCA Moses Ochele moved a motion seeking to stop the members from attending the planned trip to Australia which is expected to consume approximately Sh4.5m of the taxpayers’ money.
Those to attend the trip are speaker Ann Adul, MCAs Samuel Ongou (Masogo/Nyangoma), Edwin Anayo (Market/Milimani), Maurice Ondiek (Miwani), Maina Koko (North Nyakach), Caroline Owen (Kisumu South) and the assembly deputy clerk Owen Ojuok.
While tabling the motion during Tuesday’s afternoon session, Ochele argued that the trip was ill-timed and a waste of the assembly funds at a time when it is running its businesses on deficit.
He said the intended trip was without any special responsibility and lacked clearance from the assembly Liaison committee.
According to the motion each of the members is to pocket a whooping Sh640, 000 from the earmarked trip.
“It is in the interest of the public that the assembly meager resources be utilized for the good of the people. As visionary leaders we cannot allow the trip to take off,” Ochele said, adding that the money can be reverted to facilitate other assembly important activities such as public participation on the 2017/2018 county budget.
