Police in Malindi are still holding six family members arrested in connection with financing of terrorist activities in the country and Somalia.
Malindi police boss Matawa Muchangi said the six had links with the 1998 U.S Embassy bombings suspect Fazul Mohammed who was killed in Somalia in 2011.
Muchangi said that the relatives were suspected of extending terror activities in the country after Fazul was shot dead at a road block in Somalia.
He said the suspects were arrested at the old courts on Sunday during a sting operation carried out by police officers drawn from Anti-terror police unit and Directorate of Criminal Investigations.
“The suspects who are of Arab origin have links to Al shabaab leader Fazul Mohammed who escaped police dragnet in Malindi in 2008 and investigations indicate that despite the terror suspect’s death, the six continued to have a hand in terrorism activities in the country,” he said.
Fazul had escaped to Somalia with Moslhem Naheed who was arrested in the operation.
