Drama unfolded in Mombasa on Wednesday evening when a traffic officer swallowed Sh 2, 000 that he had solicited from a taxi driver.
The officer attached to the Dog Unit section had been caught red-handed by officers from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission taking the money from a tuk tuk driver in Kongowea.
EACC Mombasa regional boss George Ojowi said the hunt for the officer, who has gone underground from his work station, has been intensified.
Ojowi said the officer has also switched off his phone and his seniors cannot trace him either.
“He took off with the money and swallowed it to hide the evidence, but we are following up with his seniors and we will catch up with him,” he said.
More puzzling is the fact that the officer was caught while soliciting for briibes from the tuk tuks despite being attached to the Dog Unit which is not authorised to deal with traffic issues.
Ojowi said his officers would have shot at the officer who had brandished his pistol at them but were restrained because the area was crowded.
