Police in Mombasa are interrogating a woman suspected of hurling a canister of pepper tear gas to a crowd during Governor Hassan Joho welcome rally on Sunday.
Kisauni OCPD Christopher Rotich said police are questioning the woman who is alleged to be one of the campaigners of Joho over the source of the teargas.
According to investigations, the teargas canister thrown at the crowd was similar to those used by the police.
Rotich who termed the incident as unfortunate added that it was an offense for anyone to use tear gas to control crowds in such gatherings.
“It is a criminal offense for anyone to use anything that may cause harm to disperse people, we are investigating the matter and once we have completed our investigations, someone will be held accountable for using it in public without authorization,” he said.
He said the motive of using the peeper teargas has not yet been established.
According to sources the pepper canisters were hurled to the crowds as the rally was coming to an end and almost caused a near stampede as people scampered for safety.
