Government spokesperson Erick Kiraithe has downplayed reports that he is among candidates in consideration to replace Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet.
Boinnet’s four-year term comes to an end at the end of March.
It is non-renewable.
Kiraithe together with GSU Commandant Douglas Kanja, Police spokesman Charles Owino and DCI boss George Kinoti are among top cops who could replace Boinnet.
However, Kiraithe on Monday said talks of who will replace who in future are not important.
“The position has not even been advertised,” said the government spokesman.
He said he holds a critical government position that requires no distraction by future events.
Speaking at a press briefing in Mombasa’s Mbaraki Sports Club, Kiraithe said he is not done with his current job.
“I have not even done 50 per cent of what wanted to do at this current position,” he noted.
He said he wants to focus on what he can do to help improve the country.
“Debate on this does not help,” he said.
At the same time, Kirathe has asked Kenyans not to be obsessed with 2022 politics.
