Outgoing US ambassador Robert Godec says serving Kenyans was his greatest privilege as it deepened a special partnership with his country.
In a statement on Thursday, he said that while Illinois Senator Kyle McCarter is considered for the office, he and the US Embassy will continue to advance shared goals and prepare for a smooth transition.
President Donald Trump nominated McCarter as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the US to Kenya in an announcement on Wednesday.
Godec noted the United States and Kenya have woven an extraordinary tapestry of ties.
“Kenya holds a special place in my heart. I offer a warm asanteni sana (thank you very much) to the Kenyan government, Kenyan people and my embassy colleagues for their extraordinary friendship and collaboration over the years.”
The envoy has served since January 16, 2013.
Sources at the US Embassy in Nairobi told the Star that he has not been recalled but will go back to Washington for reassignment.
“He is the longest-serving US ambassador in the world as well as in Kenya. He has been asked to extend his tour of duty twice and now that the elections are done, and the handshake happened, it is a good time for the transition,” the source said on Thursday.
Godec will be remembered for efforts including his February call for Kenyans to protect democracy.
In an address to Generation Kenya youths, he noted the people have made great sacrifices for their independence so they must have the freedom necessary for success.
