A lecturer at Chuka University on Thursday caused a commotion when he threatened to hack colleagues with a panga after they allegedly branded him a traitor.
Addressing media at Ndagani market, Universities Academic Staff Union (Uasu) Chuka Chapter secretary general Thomas Motindi said the lecturer confronted his colleagues at a team-building session and demanded explanation why they were referring to him as a traitor.
Motindi said the lecturers remained silent before the colleague drew a panga from his car threatening to hack them and sending the team into panic mood. “We were shocked when we saw him coming back with a panga.”
Motindi said terrified lecturers ran for their lives as the accused chased them.
The official said he later recorded a statement at Chuka Police Station and asked authorities to take legal action against the suspect.
Another lecturer who sought anonymity said the suspect is a close ally of a top university official and that he hardly attends their team building activities. They also accuse him of leaking sensitive information to the administration, especially in regard to the ongoing lecturers strike.
Lecturers are in their third week of nationwide strike demanding an implementation of the 2013-2017 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
