Kisii County Director of Education, Dr William Sugut has warned school heads against forcing learners to repeat, saying it flouts the Education Act.
The CDE noted some schools subject learners to examinations and force them to repeat, saying it demoralizes and wastes their time.
He said he has dispatched a team of officers to schools to investigate the allegations and avail him a report for action, adding some school Heads were fond of forcing children to repeat under the guise that those promoted to the next class can do better in subsequent classes and in national examinations.
“Teachers who force children to repeat are violating the learners’ rights. Action will be taken against those found culpable,” noted Sugut.
The Director noted children have aright to advance to subsequent classes, do national examinations and advance their education to exploit their talents to benefit them and the nation.
Sugut challenged parents and guardians to shun subjecting their children to child labour, saying it disoriented them, hampered their education and performance in national examinations.
Some parents and guardians, noted the officers overworked their children on farms and businesses, only to complaint to teachers when they performed dismally in national examinations.
“Stakeholders have to concert effort for our children to pass in the national examinations to avoid accusations and counter accusations,” noted Sugut.
He reminded School Heads to adhere to the Ministry of Education’s fee guidelines and shun levying illegal funds to parents, burdening and impoverishing them.
