Kilifi governor Amason Kingi today defended his county government over how it purchased and supplied food stuff worth Sh46.2 million during the financial year 2014/2015.
Kingi appeared before Senate County Public Accounts and Investments Committee where he clarified the auditor general’s report on how he purchased goods in bulk without adducing documents to support the same.
According to Auditor General Edward Ouko, the administration failed to avail records on how the items were supplied to the beneficiaries in the county.
“No beneficiary requisitions were availed for audit verification. Consequently, propriety of the specialized material amounting to Sh46.2 million for the year ended June 30, 2015 could not be confirmed,” read the report.
But the county boss admitted before the committee led by session chairman and West Pokot Senator John Lonyangapuo that by the time of audit, the documents were not available but were later availed to the audit team for verification.
The auditors affirmed that they received the right documents from the county government and that they were satisfied.
Kingi also clarified on a query that showed his administration failed to ascertain the propriety of the expenditure of Sh41.1 million on staff uniforms, ceremonial dresses for the inspectorate for the year under review.
He said that he had adduced the relevant documents to support the procurement of the items worth Sh41 million and promised to avail more documents over the same.
The Sh41.1 million also included Sh29.6 million for procurement of bed linen.
The county chief will appear before the committee on May 19 this year.
