Thousands of people who depend on Lake Victoria for survival have reason to smile after President Uhuru Kenyatta heeded their pleas by sending a team to carry on a fact finding mission on how to eradicate the notorious Water hyacinth .
The team from the national government led by Jubilee party secretary General Raphael Tuju, ICT cabinet secretary Joe Mucheru, cabinet secretary for sports culture and arts Hassan Wario have mandate of carrying out ways that will see the water hyacinth removed from the lake and also look at how the fish industry in the Lake region can be revived.
Tuju while addressing the press yesterday in Kisumu said President Uhuru Kenyatta was concerned with the problems facing people depending on the Lake Victoria for survival which has been invaded by water hyacinth.
He said the invasion of Lake by the hyacinth weed was total environmental disaster. He also said the president had assigned them duty to look into way how fish industry in area can be improved and how the influx of cheap fish from Asian country into region can be handled.
Tuju said they will also look into the way fish farming can be boosted in Nyanza region to cut on the shortage of fish from Lake Victoria.
