Macadamia farmers in Kiania village, Ndia constituency in Kirinyaga county have decried poor prices offered for the crop and asked the government to come to their rescue by doing away with the law banning exportation of the nuts before processing.
Speaking in Kiania market, the farmers said before the law came into force Chinese investors were buying the nuts at a good price. Represented by Christopher Wanjau, they said the government has put more emphasis on other cash crops like coffee and tea but neglected the macadamia farmers.
He said they have been neglected by the government and those coming to buy the nuts exploit them.
He added that currently they do not have a market for their nuts and the nuts are rotting in stores since last year.
